New Life for Construction Waste

SERIKAT participates in a European project to turn construction waste into high-value materials

SERIKAT is part of a European project called ICEBERG, which involves 35 public and private organizations from ten countries. Six of these are based in Euskadi: Serikat, Tecnalia, Gaiker, IHOBE, Lezama Demoliciones, and Viuda de Sainz.

ICEBERG seeks circular economy solutions that demonstrate the efficient recovery of valuable material resources from construction materials at the end of their lifecycle. Over the next four years, new technologies will be designed and implemented to reuse materials so that they can be transformed into high-value products.

One of the main objectives is to ensure that construction and demolition waste, instead of ending up in landfills, can be converted into high-added-value materials. The project will also analyze the economic, environmental, and human health impacts of six selected case studies.

The project will provide smart solutions to support reverse logistics involved in recovering and reusing construction materials. For example, a demolition support tool will be developed to generate a quick and accurate virtual model of the building to be demolished, allowing better calculation of the types and quantities of expected waste, as well as environmental and economic impacts. Additionally, material identification and traceability will be improved.

After a year of progress, Serikat continues advancing ICEBERG, using blockchain technology to track the life cycle of assets throughout the supply chain and industrial processes in the construction sector.

The circular economy is promoting a new mindset in the construction business, driving innovation and redesigning the traditional construction model.

As a participant in ICEBERG, led by Tecnalia, SERIKAT has carried out tasks related to the Cloud Traceability Platform (CTP).

The CTP will share information across the construction chain, improving transparency and trust among key stakeholders, and recording material modifications and transactions using blockchain technology.

Automatic data collection and storage will further facilitate the tracking of End-of-Life Building Materials (EBM) and Recycled Building Materials (RBM). The platform will also include specialized databases with non-confidential data on circular construction resources integrated into the EU’s RMIS (Raw Materials Information System).
